...And every comic fan's playland The story of Jim Hanley's Universe......... As told by employee Ron Hill...
Jim Hanley's Universe(JHU) was opened in 1985,mainly because Jim was tired of stocking supermarket shelves.So,being the big comic fan he was,he decided to open a store.A few years eariler,he had tried to open a store with a friend,"The Fantastic store",but the store failed. JHU opened it's first store in the Staten Island Mall in 1988.It then moved to it's now famous New Dorp lane spot.One year eariler,JHU opened a "mega store" in Midtown Manhattan.That store has been through some location changes,and is now in it's fifth and most successful spot to date,on 34th street,right across from the Empire State buiding.In 1996,the corprate Hq was moved from the Staten Island store to the Manhattan store.Also in '96,the Staten island store was moved up a few blocks,to a more comfortable spot. In 1997,the comics industry was in the midst of a massive slump(which it is now pulling out of.).Jim decided to close the Staten Island store.It was a day many Staten Island comic fans,including this one cried.But following a very lenghty petition by dedicated fans,once again,including this one,and an extrodinary "going out of business sale",the store was saved and now continues to prosper. JHU now looks to the future with the soon to be opening of an online store,and the possibility of more store locations. JHU has had many memorable employees over the years,and here are some of them;
Rich-before working in the store,Rich was a limo driver,now he is Jim's right hand man,and now does bookeeping and other important stuff.
Ron-Ron claims he was there for teh begining and is still around now.He works in both stores and has a band.
Nick-Nick was hired following the '96 re-orginization and has now fullifed his Fanboy dream.He is alos in Ron's band.
"Stevie"-One of the more memorable female employees,"Stevie" has moved on from her Hanlness and is now a teacher.
Evan-By far,the most famous of the bunch,Evan went from store employee to creator,and now writes "milk and cheese",Space Coast coast to coast".
Vinny-Once nearly cast as Superboy in the now defunct Superman movie,Vinny now works at Hanleys,and is the vice president of Freakizoids Liberal insane posse.Wierd,huh?
